The Co-operative Group Wins EU Environmental Award

The Co-operative Group has triumphed over fierce European competition in order to scoop the Management Award at this year's prestigious European Business Awards for the Environment (EBAE).

The Co-operative Group's dedication to green issues is certainly commendable. In addition to its firm ethical stance, the Group is strongly committed to reducing its CO2 emissions across the board. It was this outstanding environmental profile that led to the company being honoured with the main prize at last year’s BCE Awards – one of the most prestigious environmental awards in the UK. This BCE win allowed the Co-operative to be entered into the European award scheme this year.

Sir Anthony Cleaver, President of the BCE Awards, commented: "The Co-operative Group is a deserving winner at the European Business Awards for the Environment. I am thrilled that their BCE win last year has led to further success. For over thirty years, the BCE Awards have recognised outstanding organisations that have achieved environmental excellence through innovation and invention. Only the most pioneering businesses are rewarded, fostering environmental best practice across all UK industries. The Co-operative Group is an excellent example of this best practice."

The Group received its EBAE award at a prestigious ceremony on 3rd June, during the EU’s 'Green Week'. The ceremony, held in Brussels, was attended by EU Commissioner Stavros Dimas, one of the main promoters of environmental excellence in Europe. The EBAE are only held every two years, and the Group faced stiff competition from 125 national award-winners from the 27 EU member states. The Group was honoured above its competitors for its strategic vision and outstanding management systems. Additionally, it was highly praised for its commitment to continual sustainable development.

Chris Shearlock, Environment Manager at the Group, commented: "At The Co-operative Group, we are dedicated to improving the environment and counteracting climate change. The recognition we have gained, first through winning the Business Commitment to the Environment Award and now being chosen for the Business Awards for the Environment means a great deal to us. Environmental commitment is intrinsic to our identity as a company, and it is wonderful to receive independent recognition from the EU in this way."

The application process for the 2009 BCE Awards is open on the 1 July. Any company that feels it deserves recognition for its outstanding environmental excellence and leadership should download an application form from the BCE Awards website (www.bceawards.org) and send it in before the closing date of 3 October 2008.
